The Board of the Hawkesbury Foundation have established this undergraduate student scholarship as a memorial to a long-serving member of the Hawkesbury alumni – George Henry Bennett OAM.
George graduated from Hawkesbury Agricultural College with a Diploma in Agriculture and Diploma of Dairy Technology – HAD, HDDT (Hons Class 2).
After graduation George worked with the Department of Agriculture as a Dairy Officer and as a Dairy Training Officer. In 1970 George returned to Hawkesbury Agricultural College as a member of the staff, in charge of student campus farms and student practical work. He continued this student involvement until his retirement 40 years later.
George spent a lifetime encouraging young people to engage in agriculture. For many years George was involved with the RAS as a Judge of Junior handler cattle competitions and in recognition, he was awarded the Royal Easter Show’s “Show Legend Award”.
George both played and refereed Rugby Union for many years and was still refereeing junior rugby games in his eighties.
A gentle and considerate man, George had a passion for mentoring young people. He also had a passion for Hawkesbury and its alumni and was recognised for this commitment by the award of the Hawkesbury Agricultural College Centenary medal.
